Praise & Worship planning grid & details

The purpose of this grid is to help you identify wise use of media in yourgeneral liturgy style.
The major sections of worship each have a purpose, and that purpose providesparameters for visuals in worship. If we can articulate the main theme ortask of each section, accomplishing that task becomes the target for ourvisuals. Visuals then are not mere window dressing or illustration, but partof the way we do what we do in worship. Ideas can then be generated andevaluated using the themes as the key criteria.

The chart lists some of the basic sections of worship that tend torecur each week. Some basic themes and key ideas are listed for eachsection, along with potential types of visuals that address those themes andideas. Using this grid as a model, your church should develop your own gridof the sections you use regularly, the themes and ideas that are central toeach section, and visuals that fit the theme well.

Classic Christian Insights

Classic Christian Insights about Worship’s Deep Meaning and Purpose

At its best, intergenerational worship begins with an understanding of worship rooted in scripture and informed by the wisdom of believers in all times and places, and then asks how each member of the body of Christ can participate actively, fully, consciously in that (which is quite different than taking our cues primarily from opinion polls and generational surveys). Here are a sampling of key themes that might be near the center of attention for worship leaders in all styles and types of congregations.
1. When we worship the God of Jesus Christ, we are approaching something ...

Reading Scripture in Public Worship

How prominent and obvious was the Word of God in this service?
Did the sermon have exclusive right to determine which Scriptures were read?
How many Scripture passages were read?
How influential was Scripture in shaping the tenor of the worship service?
Were Scriptures read engagingly and with interest?
How many different functions did Scripture fill in these services?
Did the reader(s) present the Scriptures in such a way that they were clearly from God's Word?

The Role of Prayer in Public Worship

Reformed worship is built on the conviction that congregational worship is essentially a corporate conversation with God. In some elements of the worship service God speaks to us-in the greeting, the reading of the word, the sermon, the benediction, and so on. In other parts of the worship service the worshipers speak to God-through many of our songs, our commitments, and certainly in our prayers.

The prayers in a worship service constitute a very sacred time in which the corporate voice of God's people is lifted heavenward. Such efforts should never be done unthinkingly, and such prayers should never be written carelessly...
